Drown in…

Flooding
is a three piece band from Laurence, Kansas
that loves to experiment with genre or...without it.
Last Fall, I drove four hours—through flash floods—to
see Flooding play a pizza shop in Philly. Actually it was
August but just for alliteration’s sake… Any way, they
were amazing that night. Just like in their studio albums,
the energy on stage was the finest installment of
controlled chaos I’ve ever seen. Cole Billings’ compelling,
melodic bass work and Zach Cunningham’s expressive
controlled drumming provide an addictive sonic canvas
for the intense expressions of Rose Brown—lead vocals,
guitar, and confirmed “brains” of the band. A severely
underappreciated group of talent, from my generation;
where most, if not all genuine musical expressionists seem
to go on underappreciated.
Their live shows are truly controlled chaos and their
album from 2023 is a great example of the effect. The mix
is heavy and clean but still raw as fuck. It’s a very full
sound for a three piece but they bring it all to the live
shows. They really brought the songs to life, like Van
Gogh’s paintings at the immersive museum in DC.
Less I forget, the songs themselves are amazing; the
musicality is not lost among the chaos and expressive
indulgence. That’s what I like most about this Flooding;
how far out they take their sound, with such careful
control. Even the interlude on their last album, Interlude
(The Dying Swan) is drenched in artistic depth. The
attention to detail is real in everything Flooding produces,
they know what they’re doing, and they keep improving.
I also just want to add here that I a chance to talk to all
three of the members of Flooding at Philly Style Pizza and
they were so cool; such kind people for real. ALSO…
since I wrote this, they’ve dropped a new single called—
your silence is my favorite song. So, go peep.
Listen to Silhouette Machine, or their, self-titled, first
album; fall under the spell of their cohesive, dynamic
sound. Drown in Flooding.
